Dr. Barry McCarthy, Clinical Psychologist, Diplomate in Sex Therapy and Certified Couple Therapist, will explore sexual myths, dysfunctions, treatment models and ethical considerations based on his new contemporary model of male sexuality.

Course Description

Male sexual function and dysfunction is multi-causal, multi-dimensional with large individual, relational, cultural, and value differences. This clinically-oriented all-day webinar promotes a new model of male sexuality focused on sharing pleasure rather than perfect individual sexual performance. Dr. McCarthy advocates for the Good Enough Sex (GES) model and confronts the need for completely predictable outcomes. Men and couples can learn to embrace the five dimensions of touch (affection, sensual, playful, erotic, and intercourse) rather than defining sex as intercourse. Dr. McCarthy’s approach to male sexuality focuses on complexity, empathy, and respect. He explores the multiple roles, meanings, and outcomes of sexual expression rather than a simplistic approach which elevates or demonizes male sexuality. The traditional male-female double standard is confronted and replaced by the female-male  equity model.

In clinical work, couple sex therapy leads to better outcomes than individual therapy alone. Dr. McCarthy will describe his method of creating an individualized relapse prevention plan for best treatment outcomes.

New models to treat erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and ejaculatory inhibition (delayed ejaculation) will be described and explored using case examples. A new understanding of low sexual desire and sexual avoidance will be presented with a focus on “Male Responsive Sexual Desire”. Dr. McCarthy will address men’s sexual health issues involving illness, disability and aging. Rather than hope for a stand-alone medical intervention to  cure the sex problem, a comprehensive, psychobiosocial, couple approach to assessment and treatment will be presented.

This webinar will explore controversial issues such as sexual orientation (gay, bisexual+, and asexual), variant arousal patterns (fetish, BDSM, crossdressing), use and misuse of porn, controversies regarding  monogamy, secrecy, consensual non-monogamy, shame regarding one’s sexual trauma history, and fatally flawed relationships.

Insightful and practical

A great informative course and refresher for a sex therapist. I really appreciated the empathic approach to male sexuality that's often overlooked or downplayed.
