This intermediate-level course includes lecture, discussion, clinical vignettes, and psychosexual skill exercises.

Dr. Barry McCarthy, Diplomate in Clinical Psychology, Diplomate in Sex Therapy and Certified Couple Therapist, will explore sexuality and aging, dysfunctions, treatment models and ethical considerations based on his new model of sexuality and aging.

Course Description

Counseling a couple on sexuality over 60 is unfamiliar territory for most therapists.  In this 4-hour workshop, Dr. Barry McCarthy, will discuss how to approach this subject with ease and confidence. Using a variable, flexible approach to couple sexuality based on the Good Enough Sex (GES) model, Dr. McCarthy places the essence of sexuality in pleasure-oriented touching, not individual sex performance. He will confront sexual myths and provide scientifically substantiated information on sex and aging.

Relevant models to treat erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, and ejaculatory inhibition (delayed ejaculation) in older males will be described and explored using case examples. Dr. McCarthy will address couple’s sexual health issues involving illness, disability and aging.

Why Did We Create This Course?

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the essence of couple sexuality with aging as giving and receiving pleasure-oriented touching- revise the individual perfect performance model.
  • Define sexuality to include sensual, playful, and erotic scenarios in addition  to intercourse-drop “sex=intercourse”.
  • Explain the core concept “responsive sexual desire is healthier than the demand for spontaneous desire and erection.”
  • Describe the “Good Enough Sex (GES)” model: the multiple roles, meanings, and outcomes of couple sexuality.
  • Critique medical interventions vs. psychological interventions.
